In an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan spoke about his detention at the US airport and denied that it was a publicity stunt for his upcoming movie My Name Is Khan.

Shah Rukh said it was an unpleasant experience and he would never do something like this for publicity.

Rajdeep Sardesai: Critics are saying that Shah Rukh Khan’s detention in America has been hyped by Shah Rukh himself and it is a publicity stunt for the upcoming film My Name Is Khan. How do you react to that?

Shah Rukh Khan: As a matter of fact my film is coming much later, there are still some eight to nine months to go and we normally don’t start promotion of the movie this early. Moreover, it is not very positive when someone asks you for vouching for you to enter someone’s country. Though I don’t want to say this word, I would say it is a bit disrespectful.

Rajdeep Sardesai: People are detained and questioned in American airports post 9/11, this is a regular practice there. Then why should suddenly Shah Rukh Khan take it as a personal upfront? Was it that how can you detain me, I am Shah Rukh Khan?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I am very humble about what I am. I may ---- about myself when I ---- about my films otherwise I am very humble. I am very scared of rules and therefore always abide by them. Like everyone even I had those instances when I have been subjected to very thorough special security checking.

Rajdeep Sardesai: The problem perhaps in India is that our security system is not tough enough. We still work on VIP system where a Shah Rukh Khan or a big politician can easily walk through an airport without being checked.

Shah Rukh Khan: Whenever I am flying I always stand in queues and make my children do the same.

Rajdeep Sardesai: You don’t believe in VIP culture?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I never called anyone asking please get me inside faster. I have not done that even in a night club. Even in India I don’t believe in saying ‘don’t you know who I am’ when I am asked for my identification.

Rajdeep Sardesai: When you were detained at the US airport you never said to the officers there that ‘don’t you know who I am’?

Shah Rukh Khan: If you have to say that then I think you are not known enough. I’ll die before saying that.

A 21-year-old actor who starred in Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire was arrested for allegedly extorting money and threatening to kill a casting director by posing as brother of underworld don Chhota Shakeel, police said on Monday.

The victim, who is also production-head of Ramanand Sagar production, was threatened by the accused over phone, seeking roles in his serials, they said.

The actor, identified as Ajit Pandey, had played a character called 'Javed Goon' in the Oscar winning movie. He has also acted in several serials.

Introducing himself as Irfan Husri, brother of Chhota Shakeel, he threatened the victim to give roles to his friend Ajit Pandey. However, police probe revealed that it was Pandey, who made threatening calls in the name of Husri.

"On May 24, Pandey phoned the victim introducing himself as Husri. He said that he is a brother of Chhota Shakeel and told the victim to provide good roles to actor Pandey, who is his close aide," Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria said.

The officer said the accused told the victim that Pandey had once worked with Shakeel's gang but now he wanted live a normal life.

He was produced before a local court which remanded him to police custody till June 27.

"However, the victim did not pay heed to threatening calls following which Husri demanded Rs 20 lakh," Maria said, adding that the accused also threatened to kill the director if he failed to pay the money.

During the investigation, Maria said, police found that the SIM card, which the accused was using, had been purchased from Satna in Madhya Pradesh and subsequently it was revealed that Pandey was involved in the crime, he said.

A trap was laid and Pandey was arrested from suburban Bhayandar. He was later charged under Sections 384 (Extortion) and 506(2) (Criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, Maria said.

"The motive of the accused was to get more roles. He thought that if he takes Shakeel's name, the victim would give him good roles," he said.

The accused has acted in several serials, including Sarthi, O Darling Ye Hai India and Jai Hanuman.

Just like in Hollywood, its hard to keep the politics out of Bollywood, but at this year's Indian election, the stars are just appealing to voters to go to the polls, spurred, in part, by the militant attacks on Mumbai.

Several members of India's prolific, and influential, film and TV industry have helped inject glamour into the month-long general election whose results will be out on May 16.

But instead of campaigning or contesting, many superstars such as Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan feature in public service adverts urging people to shrug off apathy and cast their votes.

"We are not endorsing any political party; we are only asking voters to make an informed choice," Khan recently said at the launch of an information campaign on the elections.

"If as a celebrity, I can help spread awareness about this, I consider that a worthy cause."

What has prompted these appeals for vote is a growing apathy among urban, educated youth towards politics which they see as corrupt and inefficient, analysts said. This has been reflected in low voter turnout in cities.

"There is by and large a feeling of cynicism about political processes, politicians and democratic institutions among younger people," said Anjali Monteiro, a professor at the Centre for Media and Social Studies in Mumbai.

Many like the actor Khan say they have been moved to do something to choose better political leaders after last November's attacks in Mumbai in which 166 people were killed and which exposed security inadequacies and mis-governance.

A tight race between the two main political parties has sparked fears of a weak coalition government coming to power as the country grapples with the aftermath of the attacks, the global economic crisis and heightened tensions with Pakistan.

Analysts say celebrities and cinema stars were jolted out of their complacency because the attacks targeted, among other places, two luxury hotels frequented by them.

"When the Taj Mahal hotel, the bastion of celebrities was attacked, it made them even more aware," said Surendra Jondhale, professor of political science at the University of Mumbai.

Bachchan, India's best known actor, is encouraging people to vote on his immensely popular blog.

"Colleagues of mine propound the importance of how every citizen must exercise their vote," he wrote.

In celebrity-obsessed India, a successful cinema career has often progressed into politics, a trend set in the 1960s when the then superstar of the Tamil language movie industry, M.G. Ramachandran, created a party and won power in his state.

While politicians mostly rope in actors to capitalise on their immense popularity rivalled only by the country's cricketers, nearly a dozen actors and former film stars are actually contesting the election.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, whose antipathy towards the media is well known, on Wednesday said he "would like to be a journalist".

"I would like to be a journalist. In fact in my interviews that I had given in the 1970s, I mentioned during most of them that I want to become a journalist in my next life," Bachchan told reporters.

"I say this because I feel that it is a very difficult task since sometimes your conscience doesn't match with reality and that's where you want to go home and tear yourself apart and take a decision," he added.

This is coming from the 66-year-old who has been castigating the media and journalists on his blog that he started in 2008.

Bachchan was in the Capital to promote his forthcoming film Rann about the Indian media. He plays the head of a 24-hour news channel.

Helmed by Ram Gopal Varma, Rann also has actors Paresh Rawal and Reitesh Deshmukh in pivotal roles.

Item number Rakhi Sawant is now planning her swayamvara – picking a groom and tying the nuptial knot with the chosen one – on a reality TV show.

Rakhi will choose from among 15 grooms on a new show Rakhi Ka Swayamvara and will her perfect man by the help of viewers. The timing of the show hasn't been announced yet.

The first of its kind show will trace Rakhi's journey from selecting a groom to the marriage ceremony.

Commenting on her decision to marry this way, Rakhi said, "I want to solemnise my marriage in the presence of all my fans who have been supportive of me throughout and what better way than getting married on national television?"

"I am looking for a companion who is warm, affectionate, someone who can dance a little bit, who respects women for who they are, and above all who is punctual. Even Sita had her swayamvara so why not me?"

Rakhi says this is the right time for her to settle down.

"Every young woman dreams of a perfect marriage. There is a right time in your life to get married to become a wife and a mother. I'm a cultured Indian woman with good values and I have reached a stage where I need a companion with whom I can share my love, joys, sorrows and success. For me that time is now," she said.

Over the duration of the show, the prospective grooms will be brought together under one roof and put through a series of challenges that will test their personality, character, physical fitness, talent and also their compatibility with Rakhi.

All through the series, viewers can help Rakhi decide, by voting for or against the prospective grooms and the final week will present the wedding celebrations.

Bollywood star Aamir Khan said the November 26 Terror strikes had stirred up awareness among the citizens to chose right leaders.

"After the terror attack, citizens are well aware about the state of affairs in the country and this will help them in choosing the right leader in the upcoming elections," he said while launching a campaign to create awareness amongst voters.

A city-based NGO, Association for Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch, launched a nationwide voter awareness campaign, `Vote for Integrity, Vote for Good People'.

The campaign will appeal to citizens to make an informed choice and also provide them with information about candidates through a toll free number, SMS and website.

Aamir, while launching the campaign, said this platform should be taken advantage of by the citizens.

The film star, however, said he would never enter into politics like other actors, as he is very passionate about acting and movies.

Taking a jibe at suggestions on the similarities between Katrina Kaif's role in upcoming film 'Rajneeti' and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, director Prakash Jha says saree is worn by many politicians and it is unfair to draw a parallel.

"Except 'Behenji' Mayawati, so many women politicians, such as Jayalalitha, Mamta Bannejee wear sarees. So how can you say that the character is based on Sonia Gandhi? These are only speculations," says the director, who is also contesting Lok Sabha elections from Bettiah constituency in Bihar.

It was reported that actress Katrina Kaif's role in the film is based on the Congress president and her look in the film has a lot of resemblance to UPA Chairperson.

"There was nothing common between Katrina's character and Mrs Gandhi," says Jha.

The film, extensively shot in Madhya Pradesh, has a starcast which includes Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai, Katrina Kaif and Naseeruddin Shah.

Anticipating a major win in the polls this time, the maverick director, known for his critically acclaimed films like 'Mrityudand', 'Gangajaal' and 'Damul', says, "If I win, it will give a legitimate position to work for the welfare of the common people in the field of infrastructure development, industry and education."

While not commenting much on the storyline of the film which is under production, Jha says, "'Rajneeti' is about democratic set-up in the country. The first schedule of the film has been completed and second schedule is likely to begin soon."

Starting a new trend in the film industry, the National Award winning director had hired 5,000 local theatre artists of Madhya Pradesh to act in the film.

"I always try to make the scenes in the film look real. Many local artistes acted in 'Gangajaal'. In this film, we have selected people from Jabalpur, Satna, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior and other cities of Madhya Pradesh. And then we put them under a workshop of 7-8 months," he says.

On whether he has any intentions to portray a character based on MP Sadhu Yadav, the estranged brother-in-law of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad in any of his upcoming films, he says, "No. I have no animosity against him. He felt bad and he has a right to do so."

Yadav revolted against Prasad, for being denied a ticket from the Bettiah Parilamentary constituency.

Shilpa Shetty has her fingers crossed hoping to see her cancer-stricken Brit friend Jade Goody, after she jetted to her place to say goodbye one final time.

The two had patched things up after terminally ill Jade was accused of racist bullying against the Indian actress while on Brit reality show ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

Shilpa had been unable to attend the 27-year-old’s fairytale wedding with jailbird hubby Jack Tweed owing to her previous professional commitments.

But the Bollywood star had promised to later visit the mum-of-two, who was said to have just few hours to live after cervical cancer spread to her entire body.

After jetting in to Jade’s Essex home, Shilpa was unable to meet the dying star when spokesman Max Clifford said that Jade was too sick to see any visitors.

But the Celebrity Big Brother winner said that she was not letting go any strand of hope to see her cancer-battling brave friend.

“I really feel terrible about what has happened to her. All I can do is pray. I’m not giving up hope of seeing her one last time,” the ‘Daily Star’ quoted her as saying.

“When I left for London on Sunday, I thought I’d be able to meet her but her condition has deteriorated. She’s heavily drugged and hardly awake.

“I feel bad because maybe I could’ve met her if I was here two days earlier. I always felt we were connected in a strange way – she was a catalyst and the architect of my fame in Britain,” she added.

Actor-turned filmmaker Sanjay Kapoor, who is busy with his film It's My Life, says he roped in Hurman Baweja for the lead role instead of Aamir Khan because the senior actor would not have fitted the character of a young boy.

"You should be looking at what is your story trying to tell. For It's My Life', the role required a young boy. Now obviously Aamir Khan wouldn't have fitted in there. Similarly for the role of a father, I needed someone whose mere presence bears a commanding authority. Of course there was no other choice but Nana Patekar," Sanjay told IANS.

It's My Life is a remake of Siddharth and Genelia D'Souza starrer superhit Telugu film Bommarillu.

Considering Hurman has seen back-to-back failures in Victory and Love Story 2050, does Sanjay have a sense of regret for his choice of leading actor in the film?

"Not at all!. There are two reasons for that. First, you have to be confident about your guy. When I signed him on, Love Story 2050 had not yet been released but I still believed in him. Second, always remember that your product is more important than a star. A good product can work without a known name but a bad product with the biggest of superstars won't work."

Why didn't he think about any actress other than Genelia for female lead?

"Why should I have looked elsewhere when Genelia was just so perfect in the original film Bommarillu. The moment I saw her in the film, I didn't look elsewhere and decided there and then that she would be my leading lady in It's My Life too", Sanjay said.

Speaking about the diminishing boundary between main lead, parallel lead and the next lead in Hindi cinema Sanjay said actors like Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan helped in removing that.

"Look at Aamir Khan in Rang De Basanti. How many actors would have dared to be one of the leads in the film that had so many other prominent characters. Still, he took up the challenge in spite of the director going ahead with almost equal footage to everyone."

He goes on to narrate other examples, "It's not just Rang De Basantibecause even in Dil Chahta Hai he shared frames with other actors. He is now doing the same in Three Idiots as well.

"I must also acknowledge the other actors who are no more insecure about their part in a mega starrer. Saif Ali Khan did what he had never before in Dil Chahta Hai. Now Sharman Joshi isn't worried when he is asked to be a part of Three Idiots."

Sanjay also feels that times have changed for the good.

"Now it's not the footage which matters; it's the importance of the role and an impact it is going to create that holds center stage. It's fun to make movies in the current times," he says.

Amitabh Bachchan is an icon for many a budding actor but his son, Abhishek says his own acting style is more like that of his mother, Jaya.

"Dad is an inspiration to the whole world. His creativity, dedication are legendary. He is a great source of inspiration. However, my acting style is more like my mother.

I would like to believe that I have the best of both," the junior Bachchan told reporters in an email interview.

Abhishek, who suffered a setback at the box-office with ‘Drona’ last year, hopes for a turnaround with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's ambitious film about Delhi.

The actor considers himself to be lucky to to get the opportunity to work with some great veterans in Mehra's film.

"The script was novel and had a great narrative but the clinching factor was the cast. When Rakeysh discussed with me who he wanted to cast in the film, I just knew that I had to be a part of this film.

"Where will any actor get the opportunity to stand in the same frame as all these great actors we had in this film. It was an awesome experience," Abhishek said.

The story of ‘Dilli 6’ is set in the backdrop of the walled city. Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri and Atul Kulkarni are in important roles in the film which has Abhishek and Sonam Kapoor in the lead.

When asked about his character in the movie, Abhishek, who is celebrating his 33rd birthday tomorrow, said, "I am playing the character of Rohan Mehra who is born and brought up in New York.

"Roshan has never been to India but the course of the film brings him to his ancestral home for the first time. The challenge of the character was to stick out and blend into the surroundings." he said.

Abhishek is working with Mani Ratnam for the third time in ‘Ravana’ where his co-star is his wife Aishwarya.

"Mani continues to push the envelop and do something new each time. We like to work with each other. This is also my second film with Ash after our marriage and it continues to be a wonderful experience to work with her."

He has earlier worked with Mani Ratnam in ‘Yuva’ and ‘Guru’.

Abhishek says he is proud of his wife's achievement.

Aishwarya recently received Padamshri award for her contribution to Indian cinema.

"It is a great honour to receive. I am proud of Aishwarya. Truly well deserved. I feel very blessed to be a part of a family which has received this honour 5 times," he said.

Abhishek has no regrets about some of his films not working at the box office last year and considers them to be a learning experience.

"Last year was a great learning experience for me. I don't have any regrets or complaints. I got to work in such diverse film in one year. 'Sarkaar Raaj', 'Drona' and 'Dostana'. A good film will work and a bad one won't." he added.

In his first directorial venture ‘Zameen’, Rohit Shetty had the opportunity to direct Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu. Since then, Rohit has worked with close friend Ajay in films like ‘Golmaal’, ‘Sunday’ and ‘Golmaal Returns’ but he never got a chance to work with Bipasha again.

Now after a hiatus of 6 years, Rohit will once again direct Ajay and Bipasha in Ajay Devgan's home production. Sadsack Sidhu lives in Chandni Chowk, peels potatoes for a living, and prays to Ganapati Bappa to release him from his daily drudge. And then one day, everything changes : adventure beckons, and Sidhu takes off to China.

Smart basis for a film, because Akshay Kumar's humble Old Delhi roots and his travels to Oriental hot spots where he picked up his killer karate moves, is part of urban legend. But instead of mining his past experiences, the script is forced into being a vehicle for its star, not the story, so what you get is an overlong Akshayrama, which perks up only in fits and starts, and is never more than mildly entertaining in its best moments.

`Chandni Chowk To China' is more a patchily-executed combo of a ---- `Kung Fu Panda', and `Karate Kid', than an exhilarating transcontinental journey. It's spiked with a Manmohan Desai-ish lost-and-found side plot. It also lifts from chop-suckey Hong Kong clunkers where the hero mows down a million bad guys, sending them flying through the air in familiar choreographed arcs. Where is this film, a lax mish-mash of genres and styles, coming from?

In his zeal to prove that he can do more than being a buffoon, Akshay gets to cry, as well as laugh, and fight and dance and sing, occasionally letting in his leading lady (Deepika, in a double role), who is only required to dress in Mandarin collars, and kick butt (as the bad girl), and whip out a ----- of her missing father, and shed a few tears (as the good one). Ranvir Shorey, who's called Chopstick, roams around looking for something to do, and the Chinese characters, including chief villain Hojo (Gordon Liu) who gets his jollies by beheading people, are mere ciphers.

The result is a classic case of missed opportunities. For Akshay, who's been busting the box office with his gormless local yokel acts, this mega-budget, actually-shot-on-location-in-China, backed-by-a-Hollywood-giant film would have been the start of a glorious new year. For director Nikhil Advani, it would have been the chance to forget his last disastrous outing `Salaam-e-Ishq'. And for producers Warner Bros, a signal to amp up its India plans, as well open doors to other American studios.

Right in the beginning, a minor character asks Sidhu : are you stupid? He nods. That's prescience.

The prestigious Golden Globe Awards ceremony to honour the best in the world cinema has begun in Los Angeles.

India-based story of an underdog, the Danny Boyle-directed Slumdog Millionaire in on a winning spree, first bagging the award for the Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Screenplay category (Simon Beaufoy), and the Best Original Score (A R Rahman).

"Your mad, pulsating affection for our film is much appreciated," said director Danny Boyle.

The story of a slum kid who participates in popular reality game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (Who Wants to be a Millionaire) and ends up winning Rs 2 crore, the protagonist Dev Patel won the most promising newcomer award at the British Independent Film Awards recently as well as the Best Young Actor Award at the Critics' Choice Awards.

Shot in Mumbai, the film has also been nominated in the Best Director Category (Danny Boyle) and Best Original Score category (A R Rahman)
The Indian connection does not end here. Bollywood's King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan will present an award at the ceremony.

Wall E has grabbed the best animation film award while Sally Hawkins has got the best actress in a motion comedy.

British actress Kate Winslet has been named best supporting actress at the Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles.

The star - who won the award for her role as a Nazi prison guard in The Reader - said she was "shocked" as she had "a habit of not winning things"

British actor Tom Wilkinson was named best supporting actor in a miniseries for his role as Benjamin Franklin in HBO period drama John Adams.

The awards are widely seen as a precursor to the Oscars.

Saif Ali Khan in his tentatively titled home production, Aaj Aur Kal shall be romancing British actress Florence Brudenell-Bruce alongside Deepika Padukone. Ali states, "While I really can't really reveal what role Florence is playing, I would like to say that it's an important role and her character will revolve around Saif and Deepika. The film is about modern relationships and the British actress will be seen in the first half of the film."

The market for Bollywood outside India has developed strappingly in the last two decades or so. And Shah Rukh Khan has apparently contributed extensively to the popularity it enjoys. The Badshah is known to be a huge favourite with the NRI population. Akshay’s enthusiastic new promotional strategy seems to be an encroachment on SRK’s territory. Will it work in the Chandni Chowk lad’s favour? We’ll wait and watch.

Actor Aamir Khan's latest film Ghajini rocked the box office, taking in 100 per cent collections across the country on its opening day Thursday, an executive of the movie's India distributor said.

Aamir Khan, who was present at the trial run of the movie at a preview theatre in Mumbai Wednesday, reportedly said that Ghajini has created a record by becoming the first Bollywood movie in recent times for which the tickets had been sold in advance for all five days of the opening week across the country.

According to trade reports, in view of the unprecedented audience expectation for the film, the multiplexes are asking the distributors to increase the number of prints. The decision in this regard has not yet to be taken.

The movie has been released within the country with 1,400 prints. Reliance BIG Pictures has released 213 prints overseas.

Meanwhile, Ghajini raked in Rs 70 million during 650 paid previews at multiplexes in India on Wednesday. "Although the movie has not received uniform favourable reviews, the hype created around it has worked wonders and there is little doubt that the movie will turn out to be a super hit," said a trade analyst.

It's a clash of the item girls now. 'Bhojpuri Helen' Sambhavna Seth has hit out at controversial Bollywood item queen Rakhi Sawant, stating that even if the latter joins her on reality show 'Dancing Queen', she would not be doing any wonders.

'If Rakhi joins 'Dancing Queen', she is not going to do any wonders. I have seen what she can do and I don't want to see any further wonders from her,' said Sambhavna. Sambhavna, who became a household name after participating in the second season of reality show 'Bigg Boss 2', says she is neither missing Rakhi on 'Dancing Queen' nor does she want to compete with her at any stage.

'I don't miss her on the show at all. Rakhi is quite senior in our league. She has done various reality shows and she has also become a judge. For her, its like, 'been there done that'. There is no sense in her coming to 'Dancing Queen' because she has reached a senior level. And even if she comes, there is no issue, but I am not at all missing her,' said Sambhavna.

But, though she is not missing Rakhi's presence, Sambhavna says she would be glad if she gets the item queen's blessing for the show. The Bhojpuri item girl was in the capital to promote 'Dancing Queen', which pairs 10 dancing divas with a protégé each. The show is telecast on entertainment channel Colors and is being judged by veteran actors Hema Malini and Jeetendra.

For the show, Sambhavna has teamed up with a young girl named Shamaayal, who hails from Benaras in Uttar Pradesh. Sambhavna says more than being worried about competitors, she wants to concentrate on grooming Shamaayal so that they become a stronger team and win the show.

'I want to see her match my energy level. All the contestants think that I have the best energy level so I want to bring Shamaayal to my energy level at least. Then people should say that not one but two Sambhavnas are performing,' she said.
